Many of Ottawa's tulips are descended from ones sent
from the Netherlands in appreciation after World War II.
During the War, the Dutch Royal Family took refuge in
Ottawa. Canadian troops played a major role in the
liberation of Holland. Ottawa celebrates its tulips with
the Tulip Festival in May, when numerous musicians and
other entertainers from across the country perform. Even
after the tulips are gone, the city is a dazzling
colourful display of summer flowers and autumn leaves --
until the winter brings thick blankets of snow! © 1999 Richard McGuire |
