Tour boats, such as this one, also travel on the Rideau Canal, providing a scenic ride along Ottawa's many parks. Though built between 1826 and 1832 to handle commercial and military shipping at a safe distance from the United States, the canal now handles mainly pleasure craft. The canal system extends 200 km between Ottawa and Kingston, though much of it uses natural waterways. Through Ottawa, the canal follows a separate route from the Rideau River.
