Strong Arm of the Law
by Doug Driediger, Calgary
(mural 71.5 m2)
Stony Plain's first sheriff, Israel Umbach, was responsible
for enforcing the community's tax collection. In 1907, the
Canadian Northern Railway Company was refusing to pay its taxes.
Umbach forced the company's hand by chaining one of its
locomotives to the tracks. The company paid up, and the
locomotive was released.
