Strong Arm of the Law

The Murals of Stony Plain

The Town of Stony Plain, just west of Edmonton, celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1983. Always proud of their pioneer heritage and multicultural roots, the town's residents took up this spirit with enthusiasm. These strong traditions have long been celebrated at the Multicultural Heritage Centre, a local show place for the crafts, history, and experiences brought by Stony Plain and area's immigrant settlers.

Given this tradition, it only seemed natural for Stony Plain to draw on its heritage when its downtown underwent a revitalization in the mid-1980s to early 1990s. The town commissioned a number of artists from around Alberta to portray its heritage in 15 murals painted on walls around the downtown. These murals attract many visitors to Stony Plain.

(More pictures of the murals are also available at the Town of Stony Plain's official Web site).
