Dr. Richard Macrae Oatway came west from his Ontario
birthplace as a boy. After growing up in Manitoba, and graduating
in medicine, he became a railway doctor for the building of the
Canadian National Railway. In 1908, Oatway and his wife, Grace
Gillrie, settled in Stony Plain. In his 45 years as a doctor,
Oatway often travelled by horse and buggy, Model T Ford, train,
or even a railway handcar, that he pumped himself, to reach his
patients. Pictured to his left is his wife, Grace, and in the
inset above is his assistant, Nurse Deans.
