Cornelia Wood, detail from
The Lady With the Hats
by Terry Winter
|
Cornelia Wood was a Stony Plain pioneer, who went on to serve
on the school board, as mayor, and several terms as MLA. Born in
Boxford, Missouri, she came to Canada as a child in 1904. Four
years after she became a teacher at age 16, she settled in Stony
Plain in 1913 with her new husband, Russell Edgerton Wood. Stony
Plain's grand old lady served as MLA in the Social Credit
government from 1940-55, and again from 1959-67. She had a
collection of more than 100 hats, wearing a different one for
each occasion. Active in her community to the end, and always
opinionated, she died on December 26, 1985, aged 93.
