The Connection (1906-1963)
by Windi Scott, Stony Plain
(11.5 m2)
Stony Plain got a telephone office shortly after Alberta
Government Telephones was established in 1906. Ottillia (Tilly)
Zucht (centre panel) was only 13 when she became a telephone
operator. From 1963 onward, Stony Plain's telephone service was
handled from Edmonton. At the upper right, a woman engages in
"rubber-necking," the popular pastime of listening in
on party line neighbours. (Click here
to see "Rubber-Necking" in greater detail). (Click here to see Children at lower left in
more detail).
